 Program Design of the Department

 

In view of the important role foreign languages play in promoting integration of science, technology, culture, and international business, the college requires that the Department of English provide students with English proficiency and skills in both foreign languages and literature. The department also aims at closing the gap between theories and practice in order to assist students to apply what they learn in classroom to the real world outside. 

 

 

As the Government of Taiwan promotes a full-scale diplomacy, with emphasis on building economic ties with the international community, it is imperative that citizens be well-informed and constantly keep abreast of the development of other countries around the globe. To meet such a demand, the department has brought forth a four-year program to help students achieve high language proficiency, international perspective, and first-rate communication skills.  

 

According to statistics, there are approximately 9000 to 10000 students graduating with an English degree each year in the country. If well-trained in the classroom, they would be able to make immediate contribution to society after graduation. To educate these students to become qualified professionals, the department, therefore, incorporates the following areas as its objectives, along with the fundamental courses of English education in general: 

  1. To teach students to appreciate English-American literary works as well
           as to attain a good command of foreign languages so that they are
           well balanced in theory and practicality.
  2. To bring out students’ potential in mastering the English language, 
               including grammar, syntax, and pronunciation.
  3. To equip students with applicable knowledge for immediate use upon 
           entering the work force.
  4. To build up students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing
           proficiency.
  5. To cultivate students’ healthy perspective toward humanity, encourage
           their devotion to society, and assist their study through   the curriculum
           of general education.
